Our School Song
The Murray High school song happens to be the same tune as the Naval Academy school song. Take a listen and see if you remember all of the words to our version...
The "Chicken Fat" Song - 1960s
By Meredith Wilson/sung by Robert Preston
This 45 rpm record was sent to thousands of U.S. elementary schools in the early 1960s as part of President John F. Kennedy’s Council on Physical Fitness to keep kids exercising. In the winter months, this was one option during recess (plus square dancing, dodge ball, or jumping between bamboo poles). Beware: this song can easily become an 'earworm'! See if you can still do the whole routine! It includes: toe touches, push-ups, march-in-place, sit-ups, standing torso twists, front-to-back spring jumps, jumping jacks, march-in-place, arm circles, leg 'bicycle' circles, inhale/exhale arms-up-down, tortoise & hare slow/fast running. Whew!
Casey Jones "Birthday Song" - 1960s
If you grew up in the 1960s in the Twin Cities, then you probably knew who Casey Jones was. He was the host of a lunch-time kids' show 6 days a week that had silly skits, silly songs, and classic cartoons, and included his sidekick "Roundhouse Rodney." The "Birthday Song" was played every day and while it played, kids' names who were having birthdays went scrolling up the tv screen (if they wrote in beforehand). It was a thrill to see your name on tv and sometimes Casey would mention kids' names too!
Remember...
Opaque knee-highs and saddle shoes? Very retro.
Just look at the Murray High School swimming records (below) that were set by some of our classmates!
Kudos to "(?)Swanson, Dave Hoekstra, John Watson, and Doug Rutford" for setting a record in 1974!
